Nginx Ingress Controller EOL: What to Switch To

devops kubernetes nginx ingress

While reflecting on a project change, I’ve been browsing Medium. Came across an article about Nginx Ingress Controller going EOL by 2026.

Curious - who’s switching to what?

Nginx Ingress Controller is leaving - alternatives on the horizon

Replacement options

Alternatives I see most often:

  1. HAProxy - a classic, rock-solid
  2. Traefik - native Kubernetes integration, auto-discovery
  3. Istio - my personal favorite, service mesh out of the box
  4. Contour - from VMware, lightweight and straightforward
  5. Gateway API - the Kubernetes standard, the future of ingress

Context

This isn’t just a DevOps concern. Architects, developers, tech leads, product managers - everyone will need to factor the ingress controller switch into their plans.

The question isn’t “if” but “when” and “what to.” Better to plan the migration ahead of time than to put out fires at the last minute.

If you’ve already taken something to production - share your experience. Or maybe you’ve decided to stick with Nginx Ingress for a while longer?
